Heart health is built from small things done regularly. None of the habits below needs special equipment, and most can begin today.
Move a little every day
Regular activity such as brisk walking helps the heart and blood vessels work well. If you have been inactive or have a heart condition, ask your doctor what level of activity suits you before you begin.
Eat with your heart in mind
- Fill more of the plate with vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains.
- Go easy on salt, fried snacks and sugary drinks.
- Choose home-cooked meals over packaged foods when you can.
Stop tobacco
Smoking and chewing tobacco both harm the heart and blood vessels. Stopping helps at any age, and your doctor can guide you to support.
Know your numbers
Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol often rise without symptoms. Regular check-ups are the only way to know where you stand.
Take medicines as prescribed
If your doctor has prescribed medicines, take them at the advised time and do not stop them on your own, even when you feel well.
